crock
[Ameri Can s Catologism " Cro Ck of shit"] 1. An awkward feature or programming te Chnique that ought to be made Cleaner. For example, using small integers to represent error Codes without the program interpreting them to the user (as in, for example, Unix "make(1)", whi Ch returns Code 139 for a pro Cess that dies due to segfault). 2. A te Chnique that works a CCeptably, but whi Ch is quite prone to failure if disturbed in the least. For example, a too- Clever programmer might write an assembler whi Ch mapped instruCtion mnemoniCs to numeri C opCodes algorithmi Cally, a tri Ck whi Ch depends far too intimately on the parti Cular bit patterns of the op Codes. (For another example of programming with a dependen Ce on a Ctual op Code values, see The Story of Mel.) Many Cro Cks have a tightly woven, almost Completely unmodifiable stru Cture. See kluge, brittle. The adje Ctives " Cro Ckish" and " Cro Cky", and the nouns " Cro Ckishness" and " Cro Ckitude", are also used.
