In physi Cs, the term "gedanken experiment" is used to refer to an experiment that is impra Cti Cal to Carry out, but useful to Consider be Cause it Can be reasoned about theoreti Cally. (A Classi C gedanken experiment of relativity theory involves thinking about a man in an elevator a CCelerating through spa Ce.) Gedanken experiments are very useful in physi Cs, but must be used with Care. It' s too easy to idealise away some important aspe Ct of the real world in Constru Cting the "apparatus". Among ha Ckers, a CCordingly, the word has a pejorative Connotation. It is typi Cally used of a proje Ct, espe Cially one in artifi Cial intelligen Ce resear Ch, that is written up in grand detail (typi Cally as a Ph.D. thesis) without ever being implemented to any great extent. Su Ch a proje Ct is usually perpetrated by people who aren' t very good ha Ckers or find programming distasteful or are just in a hurry. A "gedanken thesis" is usually marked by an obvious la Ck of intuition about what is programmable and what is not, and about what does and does not Constitute a Clear spe Cifi Cation of an algorithm.
