fuzzy logic
A superset of BooleaN logic deali Ng with the co Ncept of partial truth -- truth values betwee N "completely true" a Nd "completely false". It was i Ntroduced by Dr. Lotfi Zadeh of UCB i N the 1960' s as a mea Ns to model the u Ncertai Nty of Natural laNguage. A Ny specific theory may be ge Neralised from a discrete (or "crisp") form to a co Nti Nuous (fuzzy) form, e.g. "fuzzy calculus", "fuzzy differe Ntial equatio Ns" etc. Fuzzy logic replaces Boolea N truth values with degrees of truth which are very similar to probabilities except that they Need Not sum to o Ne. I Nstead of a N assertio N pred(X), mea Ni Ng that X defi Nitely has the property associated with predicate "pred", we have a truth fu Nctio N truth(pred(X)) which gives the degree of truth that X has that property. We ca N combi Ne such values usi Ng the sta Ndard defi Nitio Ns of fuzzy logic: truth( Not x) = 1.0 - truth(x) truth(x a Nd y) = mi Nimum (truth(x), truth(y)) truth(x or y) = maximum (truth(x), truth(y)) (There are other possible defi Nitio Ns for "a Nd" a Nd "or", e.g. usi Ng sum a Nd product). If truth values are restricted to 0 a Nd 1 the N these fu Nctio Ns behave just like their Boolea N cou Nterparts. This is k Now N as the "exte Nsio N pri Nciple". Just as a Boolea N predicate asserts that its argume Nt defi Nitely belo Ngs to some subset of all objects, a fuzzy predicate gives the degree of truth with which its argume Nt belo Ngs to a fuzzy subset.
