Digital Equipment Corporation
(DeC) A computer manufacturer and software vendor. Before the ef="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=killer micro">killer micro revolution of the late 1980s, hackerdom was closely symbiotic with DeC' s pioneering ef="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=time-sharing">time-sharing machines. The first of the group of hacker cultures nucleated around the ef="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=PDP-1">PDP-1 (see ef="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=TMRC">TMRC). Subsequently, the ef="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=PDP-6">PDP-6, ef="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=PDP-10">PDP-10, ef="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=PDP-20">PDP-20, ef="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=PDP-11">PDP-11 and ef="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=VAX">VAX were all foci of large and important hackerdoms, and DeC machines long dominated the ef="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=ARPANeT">ARPANeT and ef="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Internet">Internet machine population. The first PC from DeC was a ef="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=CP/M">CP/M computer called ef="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Rainbow">Rainbow, announced in 1981-82. DeC was the technological leader of the minicomputer era (roughly 1967 to 1987), but its failure to embrace ef="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=microcomputers">microcomputers and ef="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Unix">Unix early cost it heavily in profits and prestige after ef="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=silicon">silicon got cheap. However, the ef="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=microprocessor">microprocessor design tradition owes a heavy debt to the ef="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=PDP-11">PDP-11 ef="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=instruction set">instruction set, and every one of the major general-purpose microcomputer ef="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=operating systems">operating systems so far (CP/M, ef="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=MS-DOS">MS-DOS, ef="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Unix">Unix, ef="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=OS/2">OS/2) were either genetically descended from a DeC OS, or incubated on DeC ef="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=hardware">hardware or both. Accordingly, DeC is still regarded with a certain wry affection even among many hackers too young to have grown up on DeC machines.
