To allow ef="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=heterogeneous networks">heterogeneous networks to share directory information the ef="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=ITU">ITU proposed a common structure called ef="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=X.500">X.500. However, its complexity and lack of seamless ef="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Internet">Internet support led to the development of {Lightweight Directory Access Protocol} (LDAP) which has continued to evolve under the aegis of the ef="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=IeTF">IeTF. Despite its name ef="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=LDAP">LDAP is too closely linked to ef="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=X.500">X.500 to be "lightweight". ef="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=LDAP">LDAP was adopted by several companies such as {Netscape Communications Corporation} (Netscape Directory Server) and has become a ef="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=de facto standard">de facto standard for directory services. Other LDAP compatible offerings include ef="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Novell, Inc.">Novell, Inc.' s ef="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Novell Directory Services">Novell Directory Services (NDS) and {Microsoft Corporation}' s {Active Directory}.
