Open Systems Interconnection
(OSI-RM, OSI Reference Model, seven layer model) A model of network architecture and a suite of href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=protocols">protocols (a href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=protocol stack">protocol stack) to implement it, developed by href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=ISO">ISO in 1978 as a framework for international href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=standards">standards in heterogeneous computer href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=network">network architecture. The OSI architecture is split between seven href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=layers">layers, from lowest to highest: 1 href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=physical layer">physical layer, 2 href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=data link layer">data link layer, 3 href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=network layer">network layer, 4 href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=transport layer">transport layer, 5 href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=session layer">session layer, 6 href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=presentation layer">presentation layer, 7 href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=application layer">application layer. Each layer uses the layer immediately below it and provides a service to the layer above. In some implementations a layer may itself be composed of sub-layers.
