Samba
A free suite of programs which implement the href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Server Message Block">Server Message Block (SMB) protocol. Originally developed for href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Unix">Unix by Andrew Tridgell at the href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Australian National University">Australian National University, the Samba href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=server">server allows files and printers on the href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=host">host href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=operating system">operating system to be shared with href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=clients">clients such as href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Windows for Workgroups">Windows for Workgroups, href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=DOS">DOS, href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=OS/2">OS/2, href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Windows NT">Windows NT and others. For example, instead of using href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=telnet">telnet to log in to a Unix machine to edit a file there, a href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Windows 95">Windows 95 user might connect a drive in the Windows href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Explorer">Explorer to a Samba server on the Unix machine and edit the file in a Windows editor. A Unix client called smbclient, built from the same {source code}, allows {ftp}-like access to SMB resources. Samba is available for many Unix variants, OS/2, and href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=VMS">VMS. Porting to href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Novell Netware">Novell Netware is in progress (August 1996). smblib is a href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=portable">portable generic library for making SMB calls for implementing href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=client/server">client/server functions from within any program. href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Linux">Linux implements a complete file system (based on smbclient) so by default Linux users have full access to resources on href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=LAN Server">LAN Server, Windows NT and href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=LAN Manager">LAN Manager networks. href="http://www.samba.org/samba/samba.html">Start .
