Sather
/Say-ther/ (Named after the Sather Tower at href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=UCB">UCB, as opposed to the Eiffel Tower). An interactive href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=object-oriented">object-oriented language designed by Steve M. Omohundro at href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=ICSI">ICSI in 1991. Sather has simple href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=syntax">syntax, similar to href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Eiffel">Eiffel, but it is non-proprietary and faster. Sather 0.2 was nearly a subset of Eiffel 2.0, but Sather 1.0 adds many distinctive features: parameterised href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=class">classes, href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=multiple inheritance">multiple inheritance, statically-checked href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=strong typing">strong typing, href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=garbage collection">garbage collection. The compiler generates href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=C">C as an href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=intermediate language">intermediate language. There are versions for most href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=workstation">workstations. Sather attempts to retain much of href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Eiffel">Eiffel' s theoretical cleanliness and simplicity while achieving the efficiency of href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=C++">C++. The compiler generates efficient and portable C code which is easily integrated with existing code. A variety of development tools including a debugger and href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=browser">browser based on href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=gdb">gdb and a href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=GNU Emacs">GNU Emacs development environment have also been written. There is also a {class library} with several hundred classes that implement a variety of basic data structures and numerical, geometric, connectionist, statistical, and graphical abstractions. The authors would like to encourage contributions to the library and hope to build a large collection of efficient, well-written, well-tested classes in a variety of areas of computer science.
