Tree Transformation Language

(TXL) A hybrid href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=functional language">functional language and href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=rule-based language">rule-based language developed by J.R. Cordy et al of {Queen' s University}, Canada in 1988. TXL is suitable for performing source to source analysis and transformation and for rapidly prototyping new languages and language processors. It uses href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=structural transformation">structural transformation based on href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=term rewriting">term rewriting. TXL has been particularly successful in href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=software engineering">software engineering tasks such as href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=design recovery">design recovery, href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=refactoring">refactoring, and href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=reengineering">reengineering. Most recently it has been applied to href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=artificial intelligence">artificial intelligence tasks such as recognition of hand-written mathematics, and to transformation of {structured documents} in {XML}. TXL takes as input an arbitrary href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=context-free grammar">context-free grammar in href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=extended BNF">extended BNF-like notation, and a set of href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=show-by-example">show-by-example transformation rules to be applied to inputs parsed using the grammar. TXL supports the notion of href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=agile parsing">agile parsing, the ability to tailor the grammar to each particular task using "grammar overrides".
