Graphical User Interface
(GUI) The use of pictures rather than just words to represent the input and output of a program. A program with a GUI runs under some href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=windowing system">windowing system (e.g. The href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=X Window System">X Window System, href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=MacOS">MacOS, href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Microsoft Windows">Microsoft Windows, href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Acorn">Acorn href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=RISC OS">RISC OS, href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=NEXTSTEP">NEXTSTEP). The program displays certain href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=icons">icons, href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=buttons">buttons, href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=dialogue boxes">dialogue boxes, etc. in its href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=windows">windows on the screen and the user controls it mainly by moving a href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=pointer">pointer on the screen (typically controlled by a href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=mouse">mouse) and selecting certain objects by pressing buttons on the mouse while the pointer is pointing at them. This contrasts with a href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=command line interface">command line interface where communication is by exchange of strings of text. Windowing systems started with the first href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=real">real-time graphic display systems for computers, namely the href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=SAGE">SAGE Project [Dates?] and href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Ivan Sutherland">Ivan Sutherland' s href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Sketchpad">Sketchpad (1963). {Douglas Engelbart}' s {Augmentation of Human Intellect} project at href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=SRI">SRI in the 1960s developed the href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=On-Line System">On-Line System, which incorporated a mouse-driven cursor and multiple windows. Several people from Engelbart' s project went to Xerox PARC in the early 1970s, most importantly his senior engineer, {Bill English}. The Xerox PARC team established the {WIMP} concept, which appeared commercially in the href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Xerox 8010">Xerox 8010 (Star) system in 1981. In 2001 Apple introduced href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Mac OS X">Mac OS X. href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Microsoft">Microsoft modeled the first version of href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Windows">Windows, released in 1985, on Mac OS. Windows was a GUI for href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=MS-DOS">MS-DOS that had been shipped with href="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=IBM PC">IBM PC and compatible computers since 1981.
