Prolog
Programming in Logic or (French) Programmation en Logique. The first of the huge family of {logic programming} languages. Prolog was invented by Alain Colmerauer and Phillipe Roussel at the University of Aix-Marseille in 1971. It was first implemented 1972 in ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=ALGOL-W">ALGOL-W. It was designed originally for ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=natural-language processing">natural-language processing but has become one of the most widely used languages for ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=artificial intelligence">artificial intelligence. It is based on ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=LUSH">LUSH (or ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=SLD">SLD) ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=resolution">resolution {theorem proving} and {unification}. The first versions had no user-defined functions and no control structure other than the built-in ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=depth-first search">depth-first search with ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=backtracking">backtracking. Early collaboration between Marseille and Robert Kowalski at ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=University of Edinburgh">University of Edinburgh continued until about 1975.
