Public-Key Cryptography Standards
(PKCS) A set of ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=standards">standards for ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=public-key cryptography">public-key cryptography, developed by {RSA Data Security, Inc.} in cooperation with an informal consortium, originally including ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Apple">Apple, ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Microsoft">Microsoft, ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=DEC">DEC, ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Lotus">Lotus, ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Sun">Sun and ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=MIT">MIT. The PKCS have been cited by the {OSI Implementers' Workshop} (OIW) as a method for implementation of {OSI} standards. PKCS includes both ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=algorithm">algorithm-specific and algorithm-independent implementation standards. Many algorithms are supported, including ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=RSA">RSA and ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Diffie-Hellman">Diffie-Hellman key exchange, however, only the latter two are specifically detailed. PKCS also defines an algorithm-independent ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=syntax">syntax for ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=digital signatures">digital signatures, ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=digital envelopes">digital envelopes, and extended ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=digital certificates">digital certificates this enables someone implementing any cryptographic algorithm whatsoever to conform to a standard syntax, and thus achieve interoperability.
