Samba
A free suite of programs which implement the ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Server Message Block">Server Message Block (SMB) protocol. Originally developed for ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Unix">Unix by Andrew Tridgell at the ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Australian National University">Australian National University, the Samba ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=server">server allows files and printers on the ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=host">host ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=operating system">operating system to be shared with ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=clients">clients such as ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Windows for Workgroups">Windows for Workgroups, ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=DOS">DOS, ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=OS/2">OS/2, ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Windows NT">Windows NT and others. For example, instead of using ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=telnet">telnet to log in to a Unix machine to edit a file there, a ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Windows 95">Windows 95 user might connect a drive in the Windows ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Explorer">Explorer to a Samba server on the Unix machine and edit the file in a Windows editor. A Unix client called smbclient, built from the same {source code}, allows {ftp}-like access to SMB resources. Samba is available for many Unix variants, OS/2, and ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=VMS">VMS.
