Server Message Block
(SMB) A ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=client/server">client/server ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=protocol">protocol that provides file and printer sharing between computers. In addition SMB can share ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=serial ports">serial ports and communications abstractions such as ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=named pipes">named pipes and ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=mail slots">mail slots. SMB is similar to {remote procedure call} (RPC) specialised for file system access. SMB was developed by ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Intel">Intel, ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Microsoft">Microsoft, and ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=IBM">IBM in the early 1980s. It has also had input from ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Xerox">Xerox and ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=3Com">3Com. It is the native method of file and print sharing for Microsoft ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=operating systems">operating systems where it is called {Microsoft Networking}. {Windows for Workgroups}, {Windows 95}, and ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Windows NT">Windows NT all include SMB clients and servers. SMB is also used by ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=OS/2">OS/2, ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Lan Manager">Lan Manager and ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Banyan">Banyan ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Vines">Vines. There are SMB servers and clients for ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Unix">Unix, for example ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Samba">Samba and ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=smbclient">smbclient. SMB is a ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=presentation layer">presentation layer protocol structured as a large set of commands (Server Message Blocks). There are commands to support file sharing, printer sharing, {user authentication}, resource browsing, and other miscellaneous functions. As clients and servers may implement different versions ("dialects") of the protocol they negotiate before starting a session. The ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=redirector">redirector packages SMB requests into a {network control block} (NBC) structure that can be sent across the network to a remote device. SMB originally ran on top of the lower level protocols ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=NetBEUI">NetBEUI and ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=NetBIOS">NetBIOS, but now typically runs over ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=TCP/IP">TCP/IP.
