ALGOL 60
ALGOrithmic Language 1960. A portable language for scientific computations. ALGOL 60 was small and elegant. It was ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=block-structured">block-structured, nested, ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=recursive">recursive and ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=free form">free form. It was also the first language to be described in ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=BNF">BNF. There were three ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=lexical">lexical representations: hardware, reference, and publication. The only structured data types were ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=arrays">arrays, but they were permitted to have lower bounds and could be dynamic. It also had ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=conditional expressions">conditional expressions it introduced := if-then-else very general "for" loops switch declaration (an array of statement labels generalising ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Fortran">Fortran' s ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=computed goto">computed goto). Parameters were ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=call-by-name">call-by-name and ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=call-by-value">call-by-value.
