The main differences are that the 486 has an optimised ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=instruction set">instruction set, has an on-chip unified instruction and data ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=cache">cache, an optional on-chip ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=floating-point unit">floating-point unit (FPU), and an enhanced {bus interface unit}.
