MiNT
(MinT is not TOS - a ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=recursive acronym">recursive acronym) A freeware, ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=open source operating system">open source operating system for the ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Atari ST">Atari ST range of computers. MiNT was originally based on a ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=port">port of ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=BSD">BSD to ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Atari ST">Atari ST computers by Eric R. Smith. MiNT gave the Atari access to BSD' s many network applications. A short (1992-94) romance between MiNT and ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Atari">Atari Corp., who decided to convert the system to the ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=MultiTOS">MultiTOS ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=kernel">kernel, produced a unique TOS/Unix hybrid, which provides simultaneous access to both ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=GEM">GEM and BSD application libraries. Since MiNT is MultiTOS' s kernel, it has kept all the features described above and, if an ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=AES">AES replacement is installed, it can show you a new face of MultiTOS. Unlike MultiTOS however, MiNT is based on a different ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=file system">file system, that is faster and more flexible than TOS' s. Furthermore, thanks to the network support, MiNT allows an Atari to be an ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Internet">Internet ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=server">server that can still run GEM and TOS applications! This has won MiNT many devotees ("MiNTquisitors"), making it the main competitor for ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=ASH">ASH' s ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=MagiC">MagiC. Unlike ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Linux">Linux, MiNT can run on a ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=Motorola 68000">Motorola 68000 with no ref="module.php?name=Lexikon&file=search&eid=1&query=FPU">FPU.
