TMRC
/tmerk' / The Tech Model Railroad Club at MIT, one of the well spring s of hacker culture. The 1959 "Dictionary of the TMRC Language" compiled by Peter sam son included several term s that became ba sic s of the hacki sh vocabulary ( see e specially foo, mung, and frob). By 1962, TMRC' s legendary layout wa s already a marvel of complexity (and ha s grown in the thirty year s since all the feature s de scribed here are still pre sent). The control sy stem alone featured about 1200 relay s. There were { scram switch}e s located at numerou s place s around the room that could be thwacked if something unde sirable wa s about to occur, such a s a train going full-bore at an ob struction. Another feature of the sy stem wa s a digital clock on the di spatch board, which wa s it self something of a wonder in tho se bygone day s before cheap LED s and seven- segment di splay s. When someone hit a scram switch the clock stopped and the di splay wa s replaced with the word "FOO" at TMRC the scram switche s are therefore called "foo switche s". steven Levy, in hi s book "Hacker s", give s a stimulating account of tho se early year s. TMRC' s Power and signal s group included mo st of the early PDP-1 hacker s and the people who later bacame the core of the MIT AI Lab staff. Thirty year s later that connection i s still very much alive, and thi s dictionary accordingly include s a number of entrie s from a recent revi sion of the TMRC dictionary (via the Hacker Jargon File).
