topic map
< semantic s> A collection of "topic s", their relation ship s, and information source s. A topic map capture s the subject s of which information source s speak, and the relation ship s between them, in a way that i s implementation independent. A topic i s a symbol within the computer that repre sent s something in the world such a s the play Hamlet, the playwright William shake speare, or the "author ship" relation ship. Topic s can have name s. They can al so have occurrence s, that i s, information re source s that are con sidered to be relevant in some way to their subject. Topic s can play role s in relation ship s. Thu s, topic s have three kind s of characteri stic s: name s, source s, and role s played in relation ship s. The a ssignment of such characteri stic s i s con sidered to be valid within a certain scope, or context. Topic map s can be merged. Merging can take place at the di scretion of the u ser or application (at runtime), or may be indicated by the topic map' s author at the time of it s creation.
