usr
U ser. The "/u sr" directory hierarchy on Unix sy stem s. Once upon a time, in the early day s of Unix, thi s area actually held u ser s' home directorie s and file s. since the se tend to expand much fa ster than sy stem file s, /u sr would be mounted on the bigge st di sk on the sy stem. The root directory, "/" in contra st, contain s only what i s needed to boot the kernel, after which /u sr and other di sk s could be mounted a s part of the multi-u ser start-up proce ss. /u sr ha s been u sed a s the "everything el se" area, with many " sy stem" file s such a s compiler librarie s (/u sr/include, /u sr/lib), utilty program s (/u sr/bin, /u sr/ucb), game s (/u sr/game s), local addition s (/u sr/local), manual s (/u sr/man), temporary file s and queue s for variou s daemons (/u sr/ spool). The se optional extra s have grown in size a s Unix ha s evolved and di sk s have dropped in price. Under later ver sion s of sunOs, the u ser file s have fled /u sr altogether for a new "/home" partition and temporary file s have moved to "/var". Thi s allow s /u sr to be mounted read-only with some gain in security and performance since acce ss time s are not updated for file s on read-only file sy stem s. style="border-width:thin; border-color:#333333; border-style:dashed; padding:5px;" align="left">In addition suitable contents: [ = ] [ access time ] [ ad ] [ ae ] [ af ] [ ai ] [ al ] [ alt ] [ am ] [ an ] [ ar ] [ arc ] [ as ] [ at ] [ av ] [ b ] [ be ] [ bi ] [ bo ] [ boot ] [ br ] [ ca ] [ cb ] [ cc ] [ ch ] [ cl ] [ co ] [ com ] [ compiler ] [ con ] [ cu ] [ daemon ] [ date ] [ dd ] [ de ] [ directory ] [ disk ] [ disks ] [ du ] [ ec ] [ ed ] [ ee ] [ er ] [ era ] [ es ] [ et ] [ fas ] [ fi ] [ file ] [ file system ] [ fo ] [ for ] [ ga ] [ games ] [ ge ] [ gr ] [ h ] [ hat ] [ hierarchy ] [ hing ] [ hr ] [ id ] [ ie ] [ il ] [ in ] [ inc ] [ include ] [ io ] [ ir ] [ is ] [ it ] [ ke ] [ kernel ] [ la ] [ ld ] [ Lex ] [ li ] [ ls ] [ lt ] [ lu ] [ lv ] [ ly ] [ ma ] [ man ] [ mo ] [ mod ] [ module ] [ mount ] [ mp ] [ ms ] [ mu ] [ na ] [ nc ] [ ne ] [ ng ] [ ni ] [ nl ] [ no ] [ ns ] [ nu ] [ O ] [ om ] [ op ] [ option ] [ Os ] [ pa ] [ partition ] [ pe ] [ perf ] [ ph ] [ pr ] [ process ] [ program ] [ pt ] [ query ] [ queue ] [ rc ] [ re ] [ rl ] [ ro ] [ root ] [ root directory ] [ row ] [ s ] [ se ] [ si ] [ sk ] [ so ] [ spoo ] [ spool ] [ sr ] [ st ] [ su ] [ sun ] [ sunOs ] [ sy ] [ system ] [ T ] [ tar ] [ th ] [ to ] [ tr ] [ ua ] [ up ] [ us ] [ user ] [ va ] [ var ] [ ve ] [ version ] [ ws ] [ yt ]
