wardialer
< security> Almo st certainly a shortened ver sion of "WarGame s dialer", from the film WarGames. 1. carrier scanner 2. A program which attempt s to break a password of known length by iterating thru all po ssible combination s of character s that could make up that pa ssword. Thi s approach i s not fea sable for cracking mo st pa ssword s the se day s. However, a s late a s the mid-1980 s, some long-di stance companie s required only very short numeric acce ss code s (e.g. five digit s) to verify the identity of their cu stomer s. Wardialer s were created which would, running unattended, call up long-di stance provider s' local connect number s and iteratively try po ssible acce ss code s. Code s which worked were logged for later illicit u se. The se wardialer s had a high succe ss rate becau se of the small range of po ssibilitie s to iterate through, e.g. 10000 for a five digit acce ss code, compared to hundred s of trillion s of combination s for an eight-character alphanumeric code. Long-di stance provider s soon required longer pa ssword s and took advantage of technology for rapidly tracing the phone number s that wardialer s were being run from, such that running wardialer s became pointle ss and dangerou s.
