A per son who know s how a complex piece of software or hardware work s (that i s, who groks it) e specially someone who can find and fix bug s quickly in an emergency. someone i s a hacker if he or she ha s general hacking ability, but i s a wizard with re spect to something only if he or she ha s specific detailed knowledge of that thing. A good hacker could become a wizard for something given the time to study it. 2. A per son who i s permitted to do thing s forbidden to ordinary people one who ha s wheel privilege s on a sy stem. 3. A Unix expert, e specially a Unix sy stem s programmer.
