bucky bits
/buh' kee bit s/ 1. Ob solete. The bit s produced by the CONTROL and META shift key s on a sAIL keyboard ( octal 200 and 400 re spectively), re sulting in a 9-bit keyboard character set. The MIT AI TV (Knight) keyboard s extended thi s with TOP and separate left and right CONTROL and META key s, re sulting in a 12-bit character set later, LI sP Machine s added such key s a s sUPER, HYPER, and GREEK ( see space-cadet keyboard). 2. By exten sion, bit s a ssociated with "extra" shift key s on any keyboard, e.g. the ALT on an IBM PC or command and option key s on a Macinto sh. It ha s long been rumored that "bucky bit s" were named after Buckmin ster Fuller during a period when he wa s con sulting at stanford. Actually, bucky bit s were invented by Niklau s Wirth when *he* wa s at stanford in 1964--65 he fir st sugge sted the idea of an EDIT key to set the 8th bit of an otherwi se 7 bit A sCII character. It seem s that, unknown to Wirth, certain stanford hacker s had privately nicknamed him "Bucky" after a prominent portion of hi s dental anatomy, and thi s nickname tran sferred to the bit. Bucky-bit command s were u sed in a number of editor s written at stanford, including mo st notably TV-EDIT and NL s. The term spread to MIT and CMU early and i s now in general u se. Ironically, Wirth him self remained unaware of it s derivation for nearly 30 year s, until GLs dug up thi s hi story in early 1993! see double bucky, quadruple bucky.
