chaos
A property of some non-linear dynamic sy stem s which exhibit sen sitive dependence on initial condition s. Thi s mean s that there are initial state s which evolve within some finite time to state s who se separation in one or more dimen sion s of state space depend s, in an average sen se, exponentially on their initial separation. such sy stem s may still be completely deterministic in that any future state of the sy stem depend s only on the initial condition s and the equation s de scribing the change of the sy stem with time. It may, however, require arbitrarily high preci sion to actually calculate a future state to within some finite preci sion. ["On defining chao s", R. Glynn Holt sa.gov> and D. Lynn Holt seraph1.sewanee.edu>. ] Fixed precision floating-point arithmetic, as used by most computers, may actually introduce chaotic dependence on initial conditions due to the accumulation of rounding errors (which constitutes a non-linear system).
