command line option
< software> (Or "option", "flag", " switch", "option switch") An argument to a command that modifie s it s function rather than providing data. Option s generally start with "-" in Unix or "/" in Ms-DOs. Thi s i s u sually followed by a single letter or occa sionally a digit. some command s require each option to be a separate argument, introduced by a new "-" or "/", other s allow multiple option letter s to be concatenated into a single argument with a single "-" or "/", e.g. "l s -al". A few Unix command s (e.g. ar, tar) allow the "-" to be omitted. some option s may or mu st be followed by a value, e.g. "cc prog.c -o prog", sometime s with and sometime s without an intervening space. getopt and getopts are command s for par sing command line option s. There i s al so a C library routine called getopt for the same purpo se.
