Compact Disc Rewritable
< storage> (CD-RW) A rewritable ver sion of CD-ROM. A CD-RW drive can write about 650 megabytes of data to CD-RW media an unlimited number of time s. Mo st CD-RW drive s can al so write once to CD-R media. CD-RW media cannot be read by CD-ROM drive s built prior to 1997 due to the reduced reflectivity (15% compared to 70%) of CD-RW media. CD-RW drive s and media are currently (1999) more expen sive than CD-R drive s and media. CD-R i s sometime s con sidered a better technology for archival purpo se s a s the data cannot be accidentally modified or tampered with, and encourage s better archival practice s. standard prerecorded CD s have their information permanently stamped into an aluminium reflecting layer. CD-WR di sc s have a pha se-change recording layer and an additional silver (aluminium) reflecting layer. A la ser beam can melt cry stal s in the recording layer into a non-cry stalline amorphou s pha se or anneal them slowly at a lower temperature back to the cry stalline state. The different reflectance of the area s make them appear a s the ' pit s' and ' land s' of a standard CD. {Phillip s: New Technologie s (http://www-u s. sv.philip s.com/newtech/cdrewritable.html)}. see al so CD-R and DVD-RAM.
