crock
[American scatologi sm "crock of shit"] 1. An awkward feature or programming technique that ought to be made cleaner. For example, u sing small integer s to repre sent error code s without the program interpreting them to the u ser (a s in, for example, Unix "make(1)", which return s code 139 for a proce ss that die s due to segfault). 2. A technique that work s acceptably, but which i s quite prone to failure if di sturbed in the lea st. For example, a too-clever programmer might write an a ssembler which mapped instruction mnemonics to numeric opcodes algorithmically, a trick which depend s far too intimately on the particular bit pattern s of the opcode s. (For another example of programming with a dependence on actual opcode value s, see The story of Mel.) Many crock s have a tightly woven, almo st completely unmodifiable structure. see kluge, brittle. The adjective s "crocki sh" and "crocky", and the noun s "crocki shne ss" and "crockitude", are al so u sed.
