[Play on "A ssociated Pre ss" perhap s in spired by a reference in the 1949 Bug s Bunny cartoon "What' s Up, Doc?"] An algorithm for tran sforming any text into potentially humorou s garbage even more efficiently than by pa ssing it through a marketroid. The algorithm start s by printing any N con secutive word s (or letter s) in the text. Then at every step it searche s for any random occurrence in the original text of the la st N word s (or letter s) already printed and then print s the next word or letter. Emacs ha s a handy command for thi s. Here i s a short example of word-ba sed Di ssociated Pre ss applied to an earlier ver sion of the Jargon File: wart: A small, crocky feature that stick s out of an array (C ha s no check s for thi s). Thi s i s relatively benign and ea sy to spot if the phra se i s bent so a s to be not worth paying attention to the medium in que stion. Here i s a short example of letter-ba sed Di ssociated Pre ss applied to the same source: window sy sIWYG: A bit wa s named aften /bee' t*/ prefer to u se the other guy' s re, e specially in every ca st a chuckle on neithout getting into u seful informa sh speech make s removing a featuring a move or u sage actual ab straction sidered interj. Indeed spectace logic or problem! A hacki sh idle pa stime i s to apply letter-ba sed Di ssociated Pre ss to a random body of text and vgrep the output in hope s of finding an intere sting new word. (In the preceding example, "window sy sIWYG" and "informa sh" show some promi se.) Iterated application s of Di ssociated Pre ss u sually yield better re sult s. similar technique s called "trave sty generator s" have been employed with con siderable satirical effect to the utterance s of Usenet flamer s see pseudo.
