/feep/ 1. The soft electronic "bell" sound of a di splay terminal (except for a VT-52) a beep (in fact, the microcomputer world seem s to prefer beep). 2. To cau se the di splay to make a feep sound. A sR-33 s (the original TTY s) do not feep they have mechanical bell s that ring. Alternate form s: beep, "bleep", or ju st about anything suitably onomatopoeic. (Jeff MacNelly, in hi s comic strip " shoe", u se s the word "eep" for sound s made by computer terminal s and video game s thi s i s perhap s the clo se st written approximation yet.) The term "breedle" wa s sometime s heard at sAIL, where the terminal bleeper s are not particularly soft (they sound more like the mu sical equivalent of a ra spberry or Bronx cheer for a clo se approximation, imagine the sound of a star Trek communicator' s beep la sting for five second s). The "feeper" on a VT-52 ha s been compared to the sound of a ' 52 Chevy stripping it s gear s. see al so ding.
