1. (MIT and Berkeley) To prettify hardcopy of code, e specially LI sP code, by reindenting line s, printing keyword s and comment s in di stinct font s (if available), etc. Thi s u sage wa s a ssociated with the MacLI sP community and i s now rare prettyprint wa s and i s the generic term for such operation s. 2. (Unix) To generate the formatted ver sion of a document from the nroff, troff, TeX, or scribe source. 3. To run seemingly interminably, e specially (but not nece ssarily) if performing some tediou s and inherently u sele ss ta sk. similar to crunch or grovel. Grinding ha s a connotation of u sing a lot of CPU time, but it i s po ssible to grind a di sk, network, etc. see al so hog. 4. To make the whole sy stem slow. "Troff really grind s a PDP-11." 5.
