LINCtape
< storage> A formatted, block-oriented, high-reliability, random access tape sy stem u sed on the {Laboratory In strument Computer}. The tape wa s 3/4" wide. The funny DECtape i s actually a variant of the original LINCtape. According to Wesley Clark, DEC tried to "improve" the LINCtape sy stem, which mechanically, wa s wonderfully simple and elegant. The DEC ver sion had pre ssure finger s and tape guide s to force alignment a s well a s huge DC servo motor s and complex control circuitry. The se literally shredded the tape to bit s if not carefully adju sted, and required frequent cleaning to remove all the shedded tape oxide. That wa s amazing, becau se the tape had a micro-thin pla stic layer OVER the oxide to protect it. What happened wa s that all the forced alignment stuff cau sed shredding at the edge. An independent company, Computer Operation s[?], built LINCtape drive s for u se in nuclear submarine s. Thi s wa s ba sed on the tape sy stem' s high reliability. Corre spondent Brian Conver se ha s a picture of him self holding a LINCtape punched full of 1/4" hole s. It still worked!
