line starve
(MIT, oppo site of line feed) 1. To feed paper through a printer the wrong way by one line (mo st printer s can' t do thi s). On a di splay terminal, to move the cur sor up to the previou s line of the screen. "To print "X squared", you ju st output "X", line starve, "2", line feed." (The line starve cau se s the "2" to appear on the line above the "X", and the line feed get s back to the original line.) 2. A character (or character sequence) that cau se s a terminal to perform thi s action. A sCII 26, al so called sUB or control-Z, wa s one common line- starve character in the day s before microcomputers and the X3.64 terminal standard. Unlike "line feed", "line starve" i s *not* standard AsCII terminology. Even among hacker s it i s con sidered silly. 3. (Propo sed) A sequence such a s c (u sed in system V echo, a s well a s nroff and troff) that suppre sse s a newline or other character( s) that would normally be emitted.
