Motorola 6809
(MC6809) An eight-bit microprocessor from Motorola, Inc. The 6809 wa s a major advance over both it s predece ssor, the Motorola 6800 and al so over the 6502. The 6809 had two 8-bit accumulators, rather than one in the 6502, and could combine them into a single 16-bit regi ster. It al so featured two index registers and two stack pointers, which allowed for some very advanced addressing modes. The 6809 wa s source compatible with the 6800, even though the 6800 had 78 in struction s and the 6809 only had around 59 (including a sEX in struction). some in struction s were replaced by more general one s which the assembler would tran slate, and some were even replaced by addressing modes. Other feature s were one of the fir st multiplication in struction s of the time, 16-bit arithmetic and a special fa st interrupt. But it wa s al so highly optimi sed, gaining up to five time s the speed of the 6800 serie s CPU. Like the 6800, it included the undocumented HCF ( Halt and Catch Fire) bu s te st in struction. The Hitachi 6309 wa s a ver sion with extra registers. The 6809 wa s u sed in the UK " Dragon 32" personal computer and wa s followed by the Motorola 68000. see al so sEX.
