munching squares
A display hack dating back to the PDP-1 (ca. 1962, reportedly di scovered by Jack son Wright), which employ s a trivial computation (repeatedly plotting the graph Y = X XOR T for succe ssive value s of T - see HAKMEM item s 146--148) to produce an impre ssive di splay of moving and growing square s that devour the screen. The initial value of T i s treated a s a parameter, which, when well-cho sen, can produce amazing effect s. some of the se, later (re)di scovered on the {LI sP Machine}, have been chri stened "munching triangle s" (try AND for XOR and toggling point s in stead of plotting them), "munching w' s", and "munching maze s". More generally, suppo se a graphic s program produce s an impre ssive and ever-changing di splay of some ba sic form, foo, on a di splay terminal, and doe s it u sing a relatively simple program then the program (or the re sulting di splay) i s likely to be referred to a s "munching foo s". [Thi s i s a good example of the u se of the word foo a s a metasyntactic variable.] style="border-width:thin; border-color:#333333; border-style:dashed; padding:5px;" align="left">In addition suitable contents: [ 2 ] [ = ] [ ad ] [ al ] [ am ] [ an ] [ AND ] [ ar ] [ arc ] [ as ] [ at ] [ av ] [ az ] [ b ] [ ba ] [ be ] [ by ] [ ca ] [ cc ] [ ch ] [ ck ] [ co ] [ com ] [ cr ] [ D ] [ de ] [ devo ] [ disc ] [ display ] [ display hack ] [ display terminal ] [ do ] [ DP ] [ du ] [ E ] [ ec ] [ ed ] [ ee ] [ EM ] [ er ] [ era ] [ es ] [ et ] [ fi ] [ file ] [ fo ] [ for ] [ ge ] [ gen ] [ gh ] [ gi ] [ gl ] [ gr ] [ graph ] [ h ] [ hack ] [ hang ] [ hat ] [ hing ] [ hose ] [ hr ] [ ht ] [ id ] [ il ] [ in ] [ int ] [ io ] [ Is ] [ is ] [ IsP ] [ it ] [ J ] [ K ] [ ke ] [ la ] [ Lex ] [ li ] [ LIs ] [ lt ] [ lu ] [ ly ] [ M ] [ ma ] [ Mac ] [ Mach ] [ meta ] [ meter ] [ mo ] [ mod ] [ module ] [ mp ] [ ms ] [ mu ] [ munch ] [ munching ] [ N ] [ na ] [ nc ] [ ND ] [ ne ] [ ng ] [ ni ] [ ns ] [ O ] [ ogg ] [ om ] [ OR ] [ pa ] [ param ] [ parameter ] [ PD ] [ PDP ] [ pe ] [ ph ] [ pl ] [ point ] [ port ] [ pr ] [ program ] [ query ] [ rc ] [ re ] [ repeat ] [ ro ] [ row ] [ s ] [ sc ] [ screen ] [ se ] [ si ] [ so ] [ sP ] [ st ] [ su ] [ sy ] [ T ] [ terminal ] [ th ] [ to ] [ tr ] [ tt ] [ ua ] [ up ] [ us ] [ va ] [ value ] [ var ] [ variable ] [ ve ] [ vi ] [ win ] [ word ] [ X ] [ Y ]
