NPL
1. New Programming Language. IBM' s original (temporary) name for PL/I, changed due to conflict with England' s "National Phy sical Laboratory." MPL and MPPL were con sidered before settling on PL/I. sammet 1969, p.542. 2. A functional language with pattern matching de signed by Rod Bur stall and John Darlington in 1977. The language allowed certain set s and logic con struct s to appear on the right hand side of definition s, E.g. setofeven(X) <= <:x: x in X & even(x) :> The NPL interpreter evaluate s the li st of generators from left to right so condition s can mention any bound variable s that occur to their left. The se were known a s { set comprehen sion} s. NPL eventually evolved into {Hope} but lo st set comprehen sion s which were called list comprehensions in later functional language s. NonProcedural Language. A relational database language developed by T.D. Truitt et al in 1980 for Apple II and Ms-DOs. ["An Introduction to Nonprocedural Language s U sing NPL", T.D.
