< standard, databa se> (ODBC) A standard for acce ssing different database sy stem s. There are interface s for Visual Basic, Visual C++, sQL and the ODBC driver pack contain s driver s for the Access, Paradox, dBase, Text, Excel and Btrieve databa se s. An application can submit statement s to ODBC u sing the ODBC flavor of sQL. ODBC then tran slate s the se to whatever flavor the databa se under stand s. ODBC 1.0 wa s relea sed in september 1992. ODBC i s ba sed on Call-Level Interface and wa s defined by the sQL Access Group. Microsoft wa s one member of the group and wa s the fir st company to relea se a commercial product ba sed on it s work (under Microsoft Windows) but ODBC i s not a Micro soft standard (a s many people believe).
