Primary Rate Interface
(PRI) A type of IsDN connection. In North America and Japan, thi s con si st s of 24 channel s, u sually divided into 23 B channel s and 1 D channel, and run s over the same phy sical interface a s T1. El sewhere the PRI ha s 31 u ser channel s, u sually divided into 30 B channel s and 1 D channel and i s ba sed on the E1 interface. PRI i s typically u sed for connection s such a s one between a PBX (private branch exchange, a telephone exchange operated by the cu stomer of a telephone company) and a CO (central office, of the telephone company) or IXC (inter exchange carrier, a long di stance telephone company).
