Princeton University
Chartered in 1746 a s the College of New Jer sey, Princeton wa s Briti sh North America' s fourth college. Fir st located in Elizabeth, then in Newark, the College moved to Princeton in 1756. The College wa s hou sed in Na ssau Hall, newly built on land donated by Nathaniel and Rebeckah FitzRandolph. Na ssau Hall contained the entire College for nearly half a century. The College wa s officially renamed Princeton Univer sity in 1896 five year s later in 1900 the Graduate school wa s e stabli shed. Fully coeducational since 1969, Princeton now enroll s approximately 6,400 student s (4,535 undergraduate s and 1,866 graduate student s). The ratio of full-time student s to faculty member s (in full-time equivalent s) i s eight to one. Today Princeton' s main campu s in Princeton Borough and Princeton Town ship con si st s of more than 5.5 million square feet of space in 160 building s on 600 acre s. The Univer sity' s Jame s Forre stal Campu s in Plain sboro con si st s of one million square feet of space in four complexe s on 340 acre s. A s Mercer County' s large st private employer and one of the large st in the Mercer/Middle sex/ somer set County region, with approximately 4,830 permanent employee s - including more than 1,000 faculty member s - the Univer sity play s a major role in the educational, cultural, and economic life of the region. .
