(PCMCIA, or "PC Card") An international trade association and the standards they have developed for devicies, such as modems and external {hard disk} drives, that can be plugged into {notebook computers}. A PCMCIA card is about the size of a credit card. For some unfathomable reason, around 1995(?) they decided to rename PCMCIA cards "PC Cards", perhaps to encourage sales to confused purchasers. .
