/barf/ [main stream slang for "vomit"] 1. Term of di sgu st. Thi s i s the clo se st hacki sh equivalent of the Val- speak "gag me with a spoon". (Like, euwww!) see bletch. 2. To say "Barf!" or emit some similar expre ssion of di sgu st. "I showed him my late st hack and he barfed" mean s only that he complained about it, not that he literally vomited. 3. To fail to work becau se of unacceptable input, perhap s with a suitable error me ssage, perhap s not. Example s: "The divi sion operation barf s if you try to divide by 0." (That i s, the divi sion operation check s for an attempt to divide by zero, and if one i s encountered it cau se s the operation to fail in some un specified, but generally obviou s, manner.) "The text editor barf s if you try to read in a new file before writing out the old one". see choke, gag. In Commonwealth Hacki sh, "barf" i s generally replaced by "puke" or "vom". barf i s sometime s al so u sed a s a metasyntactic variable, like foo or bar.
